13/366 – Updates, or do you need more than 36 hours to drink 2 pots of coffee?

No, I WILL NOT TALK ABOUT A MAC….(certainly i will talk about OS X). 36 hours and still updating? Well, i will refer to OS X…To be „fair“ i will not compare Tims‘ XP-install-procedure to the same procedure on OS X 10.7 (Lion). I will describe how to get from 10.5 to 10.7. The debut of 10.5 is in 2007, like vista – and you will fairly agree, vista is even worse than XP.

By the way, did you know that vista contains a file namend „wusa.exe“??? Rubb your ear and say „wuuuussaaaaa“ 😀

But let me describe how to move your „computer“ from 10.5 „Leopard“ to 10.7 „Lion.

First go and buy a new system disc for the upgrade to OS X 10.6 „Snow Leopard“. Apple charges 29 € for the SL-DVD. There is only one edition and a 10.6 server edition (compare to vista…)

If you have one of the first „SL-DVDs“ (lower than 10.6.6) you’ll have to update to 10.6.6 because you need the MacAppStore to upgrade to 10.7.

To get get 10.6.6 i suggest to install the so called combo-update, which contains all fixes, improvements and new software which apple issued from 10.6 to 10.6.6. or later

A combo update is about 1 GB…depending on your isp, you may have to be patient…

After dowloading the combo image, just press the install button. In spite of Apple’s very reliable update-procedure, i recommend that you make a backup before updating. TimeMachine is your choice, it comes with every version of OS X since 10.5

After pressing the update button, go and make yourself a pot of coffee. Only one because the update to 10.6.6 or later will be finshed already well before your coffee becomes cold.

Reboot your system with 10.6.6. Don’t worry about user settings, bookmarks or email-accounts. They are all there!

Now go to the MacAppStore and buy OS X 10.7 for 23,99€

(Note: there is an additional possibilty to get lion for those who have no broadband internet, a usb-stick)

After donwloading 10.7 from the store. It takes another pot of hot cofffee to intall the latest version of OS X . And again – your bookmarks, email-accounts and user-settings are all there 🙂

BTW:OS X, Snow Leopard and Lion are Trademarks and copyright protectet by Apple inc.

Ummm – but there is one more thing: I just mentioned Apple’s backup-tool named TimeMachine, which comes along with OS X. What do you think? How long would it take to set up a completely new system (if you buy a new MAC for example) from this backup????

Well, first and foremost, it depends on how fast is your backup storage and how many GB did you backup or how many GB do you want to use from your backup for the new machine (you can select). But even with a lousy usb-harddisc it’s only a few minutes longer than this…

  1. I’m calling bullshit on that coffee. The edges of the apple logo are too well defined.
